The Feast of the Epiphany
Christmas officially ends in the liturgical calendar with the Feast of the Epiphany on 06 January every year. Also known as Día de los Tres Reyes (“Day of the Three Kings” in Latin-derived cultures), this feast commemorates the visit of the three Magi to the Christ child, bearing gifts of frankincense, gold, and myrrh.
12 January 2025 (Sunday)
The Feast Day of Aelred of Riveaulx, Abbot & Theologian (1167)
Aelred of Riveaulx has been claimed by many queer Christians as a patron saint. He was a wildly popular abbot (head of a monastery) in England where he wrote about the benefits of spiritual friendship, primarily among men. I sometimes question his appropriateness as a queer saint because of his habit of dunking himself in ice water to overcome his passions for the men with whom he had or wanted to have a particular friendship. Nevertheless, I recommend Spiritual Friendship and The Mirror of Charity (Love) which have important things to say about the nature of love and friendship and their usefulness on the spiritual journey of life.
If you haven’t purchased it yet, Jon Carl’s reflection appears for this date in this year’s LoveBOLDLY Devotional.
